Why everyone seems to hate Machine Gun Kelly

Updated: Nov 24, 2020

Machine Gun Kelly, MGK, Kells, The Gunner, Colson Baker. All of these are names used to address rapper, and self-declared rockstar (which I back), Machine Gun Kelly.  In all truth, I became a fan about three days ago, although I’d always been a fan of ‘Trap Paris’, and now I have a whole playlist dedicated to him. However, what caught me by surprise was my announcement to my friends that I had joined EST19xx. The initial response was just to mock me. I was so confused about why, until I realized that a lot of people seem to hate MGK and so I’m writing this post in an attempt to discover why. Cause honestly I love his music (excluding anything with pop singers in it, just ain’t my cup of tea) and I think he has fewer fans than he should purely because he was hated before anyone even listened to the music. So I’m about to explore every possible reason that people hate MGK and see if I can not only understand but combat those reasons with my own rebuttals.

1. He’s white.

Off that bat, I can tell you this is the dumbest reason to dislike MGK as a rapper. If this is your reasoning, then I know for sure you haven’t listened to any of his music and also are in fact a bit discriminatory. I mean the belief that white people cannot rap should have been left in 2006 in all honesty. Tons of white rappers have proven their lyrical skill and have had some profound things to say with their music. But you’ll are convinced that only black people, more specifically men are the only people who should be allowed to spit bars. ( I say men due to the fact that the rap community feels as though we can only have one female rapper at a time, refer to Nicki Minaj and Cardi B). I made this claim to my friend and she said “no that’s not true, that’s a generalization”, and of course it is and fair enough but a lot of people hold this belief. So I proceeded to ask her to name one white rapper who is not Eminem (who had to do a lot to even be accepted in the rap community the way he is now). She had nothing. Now let me list some examples of talented white rappers: Mac Miller ( one of the most talented rappers and not just out of the white people), Quadeca ( an up and coming 18 year old who comes us with some of the most amazing bars). Hoodie Allen, Lil Dicky, G-Eazy ( although I admit he can be a bit sus sometimes).  In my opinion, MGK makes that list, he actually has a story to tell; growing up in tough circumstances in Cleaveland after his mother left him. (refer to ‘Story of the Stairs’). So for anyone whose reasoning for disliking him is his race, I do recommend keeping that opinion to yourself and just saying you didn’t like the last album, even if you don’t know the title of it.

2.   He’s arrogant, cocky and annoying

Fair enough. Yes MGK comes across as being utterly and totally in love with himself but what rapper doesn’t. They all flex on us and that is really the entire persona of a rapper. On that note, let’s also establish the fact that MGK is a persona and none of us really know him as a person. Also, don’t forget most of ya’ll were bumping Chris Brown after the Rihanna incident, so let’s not cancel his music entirely because he may hold the belief that everyone should love his music. Slightly off topic, but he is a great father to his daughter and proves that the real Colson Baker is not as crazy as he stage personality. (After watching his Kelly Vision Vlogs, I can confirm he may be slightly crazy due to the weird ass things he has actually done).

3. His beef with Eminem

I mean come on, grow up. You can like two artists that are feuding. The belief that you can’t like two artists that are beefing and the assumption that you have to pick a side is so stupid, it doesn’t make sense, we aren’t in primary school anymore. It’s unfair on the other party, only when Rap devil came out there were a few people willing to say the MGK with good or good enough to go against the Rap God. The amount of YouTube comments I’ve seen of people saying “oh I came here to bash MGK and ended up realising that he’s really good”.  And he is a really good artist so I mean it is just about giving it a chance but again I cannot make you like MGK, but what I can do is ask you as to respect my opinion and love for him

4. His music is trash

If you’ve given Machine Gun Kelly a chance and it just doesn’t sit right with you then fair enough. I can’t make you like something you don’t and we are all different. My beef is not with you but with everyone who hasn’t listened to his music and is making worthless claims due to lack of evidence. (shoutout William James, if you know you know). So before I sign off, here is a list of songs to listen to:

Hype- The Break-Up, Get the Broom, GTS,  LOCO, Trap Paris, Candy, Floor 13, el diablo

Sad/Chill- Story of the stairs, Rehab, 27, Waste Love, Glass House

P.s- to everyone who likes to call out people’s music as ‘shit’, please refrain. Lowkey, it’s rude and a personal opinion so if you don’t like it, don’t make an objective statement yeah?

Thanks ya’ll
